Since President Carter created the Department of Education in 1979 it has grown in budget and influence. According to the Department’s official website, it has a current budget of $68.6 billion dollars! This department needs to be eliminated, as it is an unconstitutional intrusion on local and family affairs. Sound radical? Not too long ago, the Republican Party was all for the elimination. The 1996 Party Platform had this to say:
"The Federal government has no constitutional authority to be involved in school curricula or to control jobs in the market place. This is why we will abolish the Department of Education."
Earlier, President Reagan had sought the same thing, but was blocked by a Democratic Congress. However, under George W. Bush, the Department became acceptable to so-called conservatives, and billions were poured into it. In fact, it became sort of a “pet project” with No Child Left Behind.
This department must be eliminated, and control returned back to state and local levels. Ultimately, parents should have the final say in their child’s education, without interference from the Government. Parents should have the right to send their child to private schools, including schools operated by religious entities, or home school, if they so choose.
The Department of Education is just another example of an over blown Federal government that seeks too much control over individuals.
