I’m new to the world of “creature feature” literature. I’ve never read Preston and Child, Rollins, or even Crichton. So, when I picked up Pulse, the latest novel by Jeremy Robinson, I wasn’t sure what to expect. And, after reading it, I was surprised by just how much I liked that book!
One thing that irritates me, when reading some book reviews, is that people tend to give away plot elements that are best kept secret until one discovers them on the pages of the actual book. So, I’m not going into detail about the plot. Let’s just say it deals with an elite military unit known as “the Chess Team,” that only tackles the toughest threats facing America, and in some cases, the world. In this particular adventure the threat happens to be a big, hungry monster, brought back to life by some truly evil villains. But, enough of that. Here’s what I liked about the book.
First of all, Robinson is a gifted writer. He writes in a fast paced, “everyman” style that works well for this type of novel. I haven’t read any of his earlier work, but I’m looking forward to checking it out! I think we’ll be hearing a lot more from him in the near future, and with good reason.
I also like the characters in the novel. The good guys are good! That is to say they have a moral compass, and they are determined to do the right thing, even at the expense of their own lives. The villains are equally as entertaining, as they are just as evil as one can get, and it makes for some great story telling.
The plot is excellent, and it provides twists and turns, and plenty of action! In fact, there’s never really a dull, “let’s speed this up” moment in Pulse. I found it entertaining from start to finish.
But my favorite part of the book is that it doesn’t push any agenda. The trend now days among some thrillers is to bash Christianity, or push some sort of political ideology and be “groundbreaking.” Pulse isn’t about any of that. It’s just a good, old fashioned adventure story that provides loads of entertainment.
Mr. Robinson states on his website that Pulse is only the beginning of the Chess Team. Here’s hoping they have many more adventures, as I look forward to the ride.
